Hong Kong’s bustling streets and soaring skyscrapers have served as a backdrop to some notable Hollywood blockbusters, including Godzilla V Kong, which sees the city’s neon-lit buildings destroyed; Transformers: the Age of Extinction, which utilised five tightly-packed high rises in Quarry Bay for its Monster Building; and The Dark Knight, which features Batman catching a helicopter from the roof of the Peninsula Hotel. Why not reacquaint yourself with these movies and find the locations where they were shot over the weekend?
There’s a big movie-going culture in Hong Kong and film legends Bruce Lee and Anita Mui are immortalised in bronze along the Avenue of Stars, which also features the handprints and autographs of China's biggest movie stars including Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, and Gong Li. Movie buffs can also book tickets for The Hong Kong International Film Festival, an annual event that successfully introduced Asian cinema to a global audience.
If you want to catch the latest movie releases, there are plenty of places to do so, with many cinema chains located within the city’s shopping malls. There are also more arthouse-style options, where you can catch independent films and documentaries.
If you’re looking to engage with the local cinema, try the Hong Kong Film Archive in Sai Wan Ho, which houses a 125-seat cinema and shows subtitled films from established and up-and-coming filmmakers.
