If you’d like to dine in historic surroundings, there are plenty of noteworthy options in Hong Kong. At Tai Kwun, a former police station dating back to 1864, you can savour contemporary regional Chinese dishes — from Cantonese to Sichuan classics — or enjoy a fine dining twist on Thai cuisine. The chef was even awarded the top spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants in 2014 for his Bangkok eatery, Nahm. In addition, there’s a tea house for veggie dim sum and traditional brews, and a dessert shop for Insta-worthy buttercream cakes and cookies.
The former Police Married Quarters (PMQ), a 1950s building, and the Former Marine Police Headquarters Compound (1881), dating back to 1864, are other excellent heritage spots. At 1881, you can experience an award-winning sushi bar, a steakhouse offering prime cuts, and a restaurant featuring Chinese classics from across the region.
For a quintessential Hong Kong experience, indulge in afternoon tea at the Peninsula Hotel's lobby. This baroque-style architectural gem, standing since 1928, offers a refined atmosphere complete with a string quartet playing in the background.
