Hidden Gems

If you want to get off the beaten track, there are plenty of untouched islands in Hong Kong where you can hike, swim, kayak, or simply appreciate nature and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Located off the coast of Clearwater Bay, Green Egg Island is a popular spot for scuba diving, snorkelling, and kayaking thanks to its clear, glassy waters. It’s not the easiest place to get to, so maybe consider booking a tour with a local tour operator.

A popular stop-off for junk boat trips, Po Toi Island is another Hong Kong hidden gem in the New Territories. It’s famous for its ancient rock carvings believed to date back to the Bronze Age and is home to a temple, lighthouse, and popular seafood restaurant. Take a ferry from Aberdeen or Stanley’s Blake Pier.

The old fishing village of Kat O, also known as Crooked Island, has teahouses and dried seafood shops on its main street, while the Geoheritage Centre contains exhibits of traditional Hakka costumes and handicrafts. Take a ferry from Ma Liu Shui or charter a private boat if you want to visit.

The small isle of Yim Tin Tsai was settled by the Hakka people in the 19th century, and you can still visit its chapel, St. Joseph’s, which dates back to 1890. Sai Kung Town offers private ferry services to the village.
