The city’s fast-paced and busy lifestyle makes a full-time domestic helper invaluable for alleviating day-to-day household responsibilities for families with working parents. Requirements for the domestic helper’s employment
As an employer, you must apply for a visa for your helper through the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The government also mandates that employers and domestic helpers sign and adhere to the Standard Employment Contract, which lasts for two years without a probation period. This contract stipulates that the helper must reside in your home and perform domestic duties exclusively within the household.
As of contracts signed on or after 28 September 2024, employers are required to:
- Pay at least the Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW) of HK$4,990 per month
- Provide either free food or a monthly food allowance of no less than HK$1,236
- Have a household income of at least HK$15,000 per month per domestic helper
- Provide suitable accommodation with reasonable privacy within your home
- Cover the cost of the helper’s airfare to Hong Kong and the return airfare upon completion or termination of the contract
- Provide free medical treatment during the helper’s employment in Hong Kong
- Secure an insurance cover in compliance with the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance
Recruitment process
You can hire helpers either through an employment agency licensed by the Labour Department or by direct hiring, subject to the requirements set by the respective Consulates-General of the helpers’ home countries in Hong Kong. Licensed agencies can assist with paperwork, shortlist candidates, and manage visa applications. Ensure the agency follows ethical practices: commission received by the agency should not exceed a sum equal to 10% of your helper’s first-month's wages upon job placement.
If you prefer direct hiring, please take note of the requirements from your potential helper’s home country. Whether hiring through an agency or on your own, it’s wise to prepare a clear job description that outlines duties, working hours, days off, and any special tasks, such as pet care. During interviews, remember to assess the candidate’s experience, language skills, and cultural background.

Cultural sensitivity enhances daily interactions. For example, if your helper is Muslim, be mindful of dietary restrictions as they may avoid pork products and may have specific prayer times. Lastly, helpers are legally restricted to performing domestic duties at your residence. Asking them to work for another household would violate the contract and immigration regulations.
