As a city that prioritises health and well-being, Hong Kong is dedicated to promoting holistic lifestyles for all citizens. Available across most districts and neighbourhoods, local sports infrastructure is comprehensive, convenient, and highly affordable to encourage regular exercise. From working out in neighbourhood parks to traversing the great outdoors, here are a range of options to help you stay fit and active in the city:
Fitness facilities
Located throughout Hong Kong, fitness rooms managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) are open for year-round public use. Individuals aged 15 or above may register as users of LCSD fitness rooms upon fulfilling the relevant qualifications, such as a written assessment or an attendance rate of 80% in the "Fitness (Multi-gym) Training Course”. Alongside 7-day advance bookings, registered users can also purchase a Fitness Room Monthly Ticket via the SmartPLAY app. The monthly ticket gives you unlimited access to facilities at designated fitness rooms. For more information, please refer to the LCSD website.
Another prime destination for fitness enthusiasts, Kai Tak Sports Park is Hong Kong’s first and largest multi-purpose sports, entertainment, and leisure precinct. The state-of-the-art complex features a 50,000-seat main stadium, an indoor sports centre, and a public sports ground — setting new standards for athletic facilities in the region. The park offers world-class venues for badminton, table tennis, football or athletics. You can book the facilities provided within the park and participate in community sports activities held at the venues. Beyond community initiatives, the city’s private fitness rooms provide a variety of flexible membership plans to cater to your schedule, while some private estates include clubhouses with training rooms, dance studios, and other amenities for residents. Together, these spaces support a thriving culture of health and wellness.
Aquatics facilities
For those who prefer water-based exercise, consider Hong Kong’s extensive list of aquatics facilities. Equipped with toddler pools, changing rooms, accessible lifts, and more, public swimming pools in the city are an ideal choice for families and individuals of all ages. To enjoy unlimited admission during public sessions, consider joining the Public Swimming Pool Monthly Ticket Scheme. Your electronic monthly ticket can be purchased and accessed through the SmartPLAY app.
In addition to swimming, residents can participate in other aquatic activities at the city’s various public beaches. Before visiting, be sure to check the GovHK website for details on lifeguard service hours, warning signals, and general safety advice at the beach.
To promote water sports activities for the general public, the LCSD has also established 5 water sports centres in the New Territories and Hong Kong Island. These centres organise craft hiring and training programmes for kayaking, windsurfing, and dinghy sailing, along with races for junior and adult groups throughout the year.
Outdoor facilities
In Hong Kong, where nature is just a step away, outdoor spaces are another cornerstone of active living. For instance, many public parks offer tranquil environments that feature jogging tracks, fitness stations, cycling trails, and tennis courts among other facilities.
Moreover, the city’s abundance of mountains — together with a variety of nature, scenic, heritage, and family routes — make hiking a popular weekend activity. To best plan your hiking trip, download the MyObservatory app or use the Hong Kong Hiking Trail Weather Service to receive immediate weather updates. You can visit the LCSD’s Hiking Scheme website for further route information and tips as well.
Towards active living
Regardless of age, regular exercise plays an important part in health management. With Hong Kong’s diverse, comprehensive sports facilities, the road towards wellness is not only an effortless but enjoyable experience.
