International Access

The multi award-winning Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is the world’s busiest cargo gateway and one of the busiest passenger airports globally: in 2019, it handled 71.5 million travellers, with 68 flights taking off every hour at peak times. Connected to about 220 destinations by more than 1,000 daily flights from over 120 airlines, it’s the primary hub for Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, plus Greater Bay Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, HK Express, and cargo carrier Air Hong Kong.

Getting from the airport to the city only takes 24 minutes via the Airport Express train, and you can check in your bags at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations prior to your flight. With more than 200 retail stores and 60 dining outlets, HKIA offers everything from simple noodle bars and convenience stores to fine dining and luxury brand boutiques.

To meet the anticipated air traffic demand of about 97 million passengers annually, a three-runway system is constructed. The scale of the project is almost equal to building a new airport next to the existing one and will involve reclaiming approximately 650 hectares of land north of the original airport island. The expansion plans include building a 3,800-metre-long runway and expanding Terminal 2 among other developments.
