As part of its commitment to building a world-renowned Smart Hong Kong, the Government is implementing initiatives to enhance the city's liveability, economic strength, and technological advancement. These efforts range from expanding free public Wi-Fi coverage to developing more cycle paths, all aimed at creating a smarter, more connected urban environment.
The Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong, published in 2017, sets out 76 initiatives under six smart areas: Smart Mobility, Smart Living, Smart Environment, Smart People, Smart Government, and Smart Economy. Many major initiatives have already been implemented, including the Faster Payment System (FPS), which enables customers to make cross-bank/e-wallet payments with mobile phone numbers or email addresses. More free public Wi-Fi hotspots have been set up, while the iAM Smart mobile app enables users to perform authentication with a single digital identity.
Hong Kong Smart Mobility initiatives include facilitating trials of autonomous vehicles in the West Kowloon Cultural District, adopting an automatic tolling system at the new Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel, and establishing more cycle-friendly areas, including an extra 12km of cycle track in Tung Chung.
The Smart People scheme focuses on nurturing talent. The IT Innovation Lab in Schools programme provides enhanced IT training to secondary and primary school students. Another initiative offers youth internship programmes in the I&T industries across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
