While Hong Kong has several noteworthy annual arts events including Art Basel and Clockenflap, you can get your cultural fix at any time of the year thanks to an impressive line-up of happenings across the city at any given time.
A centre for multi-genre contemporary performance and events, Freespace in the West Kowloon Cultural District hosts experimental theatre, dance, multimedia, and music events, with an outdoor area for music and small-scale live shows.
Love musicals? Then get along to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, which has hosted The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon among other productions. Those of a more classical bent can get their fix at Hong Kong City Hall, which has welcomed New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Yo-Yo Ma to its stage among others. If you’ve never watched a Chinese opera, what better place to do it than Hong Kong? Try the Xiqu Centre, which is housed in a contemporary building, or go traditional by taking in a show at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre; some shows come with English subtitles so you can follow the plotline.
If you’re looking for something more up-to-date, then many of the city’s hotels and bars host live music performances ranging from rock and pop to jazz and blues.
