One factor everyone looking to relocate abroad will consider is rebuilding their social circle, be that buddies for after-work drinks to other parents you can share playdates with. After all, uprooting your life and relocating to a new city where the primary language is not English can be intimidating.
Fret not. You'll notice that locals are pretty good at conversing in English. That's because English is actually one of the official languages in Hong Kong. So don't shy away from striking up a conversation with the person seated next to your table: who knows, it might just lead to a wonderful friendship!
That being said, we know there are times when you'll want to hang around people who grew up sharing a similar cultural experience. Fortunately, there are at least 600,000 people on the same boat. In Hong Kong, the expat scene is incredibly active all around town: there're the live bands and quiz nights in Wanchai, speakeasies and raucous parties in Central, expedition circles in Sai Kung, ritzy resident communities in Kowloon Tong and yacht clubs in island southside. With so many choice on offer, there's something for everyone.
With around eight percent of the total population being expatriates from all five continents, you're sure to find a community you can call ‘home' in Hong Kong.
