The School of Film and Television offers major studies in Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Sound Design, Screenwriting, Digital Screen Design and Creative Producing. It is equipped with high level traditional film cameras and a wide range of high-definition (HD) video cameras, professional camera support equipment, digital sound recording systems and digital post-production facilities for picture and sound editing, immersive sound mixing, visual effects design and colour correction. The School houses teaching, screening and production facilities at two campuses. A multi-cam studio called the Screen Production and Research Centre (SPaRC) provides a location for emerging screen practices and interdisciplinary projects.
The postholder must have both production and post-production knowledge and practical experience, including CGI and VFX production and will be responsible to the Dean of the School of Film and Television. He/She will lead and oversee all productions and exercises undertaken in the school. The postholder maintains close connections with screen industry representatives in Hong Kong, China and abroad. This postholder also line manages a range of academic and non-academic posts within the school, specifically the Lecturer (Cinematography and Immersive Videography), Lecturer (Sound-Film/TV), Lecturer (Digital Screen Design-Film/TV), Lecturer(Film/TV), Technician/Instructor(Film/TV).
The postholder will liaise with other academics in the school to ensure efficient and effective management and facilitation of all aspects of student production practice and teaching and learning. The postholder will design and deliver classes or modules and supervise screen production exercises and activities for students at all levels in the BFA (and MFA, where appropriate) programs. He/She will also be required to act as project supervisor for third year projects and/or graduation projects, as necessary. As a full-time faculty member, the postholder is expected to demonstrate additional teaching experience or substantial leadership in at least one additional area for Lecturer post or two additional areas for the Head post, such as: Creative project development, local and international co-production, screen directing, writing and production administration/management.
Applicants should:
(a) possess an advanced degree in a relevant discipline;
(b) present examples of original production in screen context;
(c) demonstrate significant experience in screen production, post-production and cinema deliverable standards;
(d) have experience as an originator in creative or functional story-telling;
(e) have knowledge in novel technology and an ability to approach complex projects from an innovative viewpoint;
(f) be familiar with VFX team structures, associated software packages and workflow
(g) demonstrate excellent teaching experience by providing proofs such as student evaluations and/or outcomes;
(h) be responsible, reliable, motivated, able to work independently and possess excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills;
(i) have an excellent command of spoken and written English.
Additional Desirable Criteria:
(a) Experience in teaching in a multi-cultural context;
(b) Fluency in spoken and written Chinese.
Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as Lecturer.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
Appointment will be on a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and mutual agreement. A gratuity payment equals up to 15% of the total basic salary earned during the contract period may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the full contract period. The amount of gratuity payable will be the sum which, when added to the Academy’s contribution to a Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme as required by the MPF Schemes Ordinance, equals 15% of the total basic salary drawn during the contract period. Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Non-accountable Cash Allowance will be provided to the eligible appointee. Subject to negotiation, the expected commencement date will be September 2025.
