Chief Engineers (Maritime) hold complete responsibility for the operation of the engine department and any maintenance of machinery.

Chief Engineers (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.
Knowledge and skills in machinery maintenance
Chief Engineers (Maritime) is the in-charge of engine room and must ensure that all maintenance works are efficiently completed.
Minimum Requirements
  • A higher diploma in mechanical (marine) engineering or above is usually required
  • Relevant certificates recognised by ocean going sector and/ or river trade sector; Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 1
  • 24 months of sea-time experience after attaining Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 2
