Description of Tasks

Chief Officers (Maritime) assist Ship Master to maintain the safety and security of the ship. They also plan and direct the works of deck department.

Professional knowledge and skills in maritime services

Chief Officers (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.

Professional knowledge and skills in using navigational equipment

Chief Officers (Maritime) must be able to use navigational equipment to assist Ship Master to navigate and steer ship.

Minimum Requirements

  • A higher diploma in maritime studies or equivalent is usually required
  • Relevant certificates recognised by ocean going sector and/ or river trade sector; Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 2
  • 12 to 24 months sea-time experience after attaining Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 2
