Structural Engineer

Description of Tasks

Structural Engineers investigate and design structures (in particular, buildings) to withstand stresses and pressures imposed through environmental conditions and human use; to ensure buildings, bridges, or dams to have the desired strength and durability.

Construction project management knowledge and skills

To lead structural engineering construction projects, Structural Engineers must manage projects from start to finish. They must coordinate effectively with different professionals and clients and have to make choices to ensure that the projects are well completed on time and within budget.

Professional knowledge and skills in structural engineering

Structural Engineers must always apply professional knowledge and skills in structural engineering to solve issues and problems at work.

Minimum Requirements

  • Normally have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or structural engineering discipline.  Holders of relevant higher diplomas can articulate to related degree programmes.
  • Generally are corporate membership of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in Civil/ Structural/ Geotechnical disciplines, or equivalent
  • Usually 4 to 6 years of relevant work experience is required
