Volunteering opportunities in Hong Kong

As an international metropolis, Hong Kong is known not only for its vibrant economy and diverse culture but also for its strong spirit of volunteering. By volunteering, you can expand your social network, deepen your cultural understanding, enhance your professional skills, and grow personally while becoming better integrated with the local community.

Talent⁺ Volunteer Programme

Hong Kong Talent Engage launched the Talent⁺ Volunteer Programme in September 2024 to connect talent with the community by showcasing their care and concern through volunteer work. In partnership with the Agency for Volunteer Service, NGOs, designated partners, and corporations, the programme enables incoming talent to contribute their unique skills and interests through diverse volunteering opportunities.

The programme connects arriving talent with local residents through enriching community activities, helping them build networks and adapt to life in Hong Kong. Volunteer opportunities range from academic tutoring and teaching Mandarin to schoolchildren to providing SME consultations and supporting major events such as the National Games.

At the recent Fai Chun Writing Workshop, volunteers created traditional Chinese New Year decorations alongside community members and offered them to the elderly — an activity that combined cultural experience with social networking and community service. If you are interested in participating in Talent⁺ Volunteer Programme, stay tuned for our latest event updates.

Other diverse volunteering opportunities

Beyond the Talent⁺ Volunteer Programme, Hong Kong offers a wide variety of volunteering opportunities suited to diverse interests and skills. These activities create natural settings for interacting with locals, practising the local language, and gaining a better understanding of the community. You can contact relevant organisations for specific requirements and language prerequisites. Here are two examples of volunteer services:

  • Environmental conservation volunteers
Hong Kong actively promotes environmental conservation and biodiversity volunteering, offering opportunities to gain expertise in ecological conservation and horticultural care. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's "Green Volunteer Scheme" enables participants to inspect trees, report problems, and promote horticulture. New volunteers receive basic training in tree care and urban greening. To join, download and submit the application form from the department's website.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department runs the Hong Kong Wetland Park Volunteer Scheme for wetland conservation and education. Volunteers lead tours, maintain habitats and conduct public education. Nature enthusiasts can enrol in the three-day Wetland Eco-tour Guide Training Course to master wetland ecology knowledge and tour guiding.
  • Animal volunteers
For animal lovers interested in rescue work, several non-profit animal protection organisations welcome volunteers to contribute their skills.
The city also features animal-assisted therapy initiatives, such as the "Animal-Assisted Therapy Ambassador Program," where volunteers and their dogs can train to become certified therapy teams, offering emotional support and stress relief to visitors.

Getting involved in Hong Kong's volunteer work

Please note that the eligibilities for volunteering vary across different talent schemes. In the meantime, you are encouraged to participate in government-recognised programmes or check our latest news for upcoming activities.

Volunteering allows individuals from all walks of life to share their talents through cultural integration, environmental conservation, and social services. Each volunteer contributes to Hong Kong's community. These experiences enrich both personal lives and society, fostering a stronger, more connected community.
